Lotsa lotsa lotsa pix!

Here are tons of photos from last Sunday at the Singapore Expo.

There were cats up for adoption

And there were cats up for show

There were even cats up for sale! But I won't be focusing too much on them

Back to the cats up for adoption... is it just me or is there a story locked behind their eyes?

Some cats played it pretty and they played it cool

Others seemed to be telling a sad tale and begging to be loved

A few of the younger kittens, not used to the noisy crowd, bundled themselves together in fear

Frightened and stressed, they flattened themselves as best as they could. Poor things...

This smart-looking Tuxedo tried to soothe the frightened kittens next to him. "Don't worry, no harm will come to you"

"Are you sure? Are you sure? Coz I'm not so sure!"

"Why are you so worried? Enjoy the day, dude... purr..."

"Purr... purr... purr..."

"Tsk-tsk! The indignity!"
Now let's visit the show cats.

The Expo hall was very cold. Some kitties tried to stay warm under towels in their prettily decorated cages

Others chose to stay warm under towels on their owner's chest

"Would you... please? I'm trying to relax"

Some other cats with fabulously fluffy fur needed no towels at all

"Who wants Garfield when you can have ME!"

This beautiful snow-white kitty was quite camera-shy

But after her owner spent 5 minutes cajoling her to look into my camera, she relented

This kitty has got to be the most photogenic in the whole hall

She looked like she belonged on the cover of Paws Illustrated

This grouchy Gremlin-looking thing just wanted to stay hidden in the darkness of his cage

This one, however, preferred to be shown off proudly like a regal king

This kitty wanted some time-out in his cage that had been decorated like an underwater paradise

"Will I win a prize for my Siamese features?"

"Will I win a prize for my deep blue eyes?"

"Will I win a prize for my sweet face and pink nose?"

"Will I wi... What? I won? I actually won?!"

"Thank you! Thank you! Now... for a picture of me with my prize"
What a day it has been for all the cats. By 6pm, they were completely tired out from the bustle and excitement.

Here's a show cat sneaking a snooze in his carpeted cage

And here's another who has fallen asleep on a tiny pillow

And to all the cats who were up for adoption... Sleep well, my friends. May you wake up to find yourself loved in your Forever Home!

Would you take a one-eyed kitty over a gorgeous cutie?

Adoption drives are always fun and interesting. And Sunday's was no different.

The new poster stand, sturdy and impressive-looking, unlike the old one that was just a styrofoam board held up by strings

The Flyer and I enjoy meeting and talking with the people. We feel that it is important to educate them on the proper caring of cats and to help clear up any misconceptions they may have about our feline friends.

Potential adopters taking in all the info on the different cats

Two of the questions that I am asked most often are:
  • Why does my cat pee and poo outside the litterbox? How can I get it to break that habit?
  • want to adopt another cat. But I am afraid my unfriendly cat will fight with the new one. What can I do?
The answers are simple ones. And by the time I am done explaining them, the people are often surprised at how simple the methods are. It pleases me immensely to be able to offer solutions to these families to help them live more happily with their cats.

The CWS merchandise booth did very well that day

The questions that despair me are:
  • I picked up a stray kitten at my void deck. Now I want to adopt that long-haired Birman cat. When my kitten gets older, can I leave it at the void deck?
  • I want to start travelling more. But that means my cats will be alone at home for many days. What can you do to help me?
Guess who I saw huddled into a furry bundle inside one of the cages… CatDonna's Hazel! The poor thing was one tensed up ball of fur. I petted him on his nose and was greeted with a soundless hiss

I would always have to stop my face from contorting into a look of utter shock and horror... then take a deep breath to calm myself down... and finally launch into the necessary lecture without sounding like a total nag.
It is these people that exhaust me completely. So I am always very glad to meet the sweet folks whom the angels have sent down to love and protect the cats.

The new reference flip book for kittens and special-needs cats

There was this family at the adoption drive. They were looking to adopt a cat for a family pet. As they studied all the posters and flipped through the boards, the kids were drawn to a very cute white kitten. "This one! This one!" they cried out excitedly to their parents.

The father took one look at the sweet-looking kitten, he shook his head and said, "No, this one is very cute. Many people will want it. It will have no problem finding a home. We should take one that nobody will want."

"Huh?!" gasped the children in disappointment. "So we have to take an ugly cat?"

"Yes, an ugly cat," the father said.

"But this one is SO cute!" the kids cried out, pointing furiously at the white kitten.

"Er... yes," the mother said quietly, looking pleadingly at her husband. "That one really is quite cute."

"No," the father said firmly. "Only an ugly cat," and he made them look through the posters of the special-needs cats... the ones with only three legs or some kind of deformity.

Who will the family take? Cute little Jellybean (left) or one-eyed Jack (right)?

The father took an instant liking to Jack, a dear little kitten who had to have one eye removed. The kids didn't seem so enthusiastic, but they followed their father's lead.

Jack won over the hearts of a good man and his family

As the father filled out the adoption application form, the eldest daughter kept returning to stare at Jack's picture. She would study his photo carefully as though memorising his face. Then she would go away, only to return to stare at his poster again and nodding her head ever so slightly. It was as though she was firmly deciding that he was now the cat she would love always.

It was all so sweet.

'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin dead

SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Steve Irwin, the enthusiastic "Crocodile Hunter" who enthralled audiences around the world with his wildlife adventures, died Monday after being stung by a stingray while shooting a TV program off Australia's north coast.
Media reports say Irwin was snorkeling at Batt Reef, a part of the Great Barrier Reef about 9 miles (about 15 kilometers) from the town of Port Douglas, when the incident happened on Monday morning.
Irwin, 44, was killed by a stingray barb that pierced his chest, according to Cairns police sources.

Irwin developed a reputation as the "Crocodile Hunter"

Irwin was in the area to film pieces for a show called "The Ocean's Deadliest" with Philippe Cousteau, grandson of Jacques, Irwin's manager and friend John Stainton told CNN's "American Morning." But weather had prevented the crew from doing work for that program, said Stainton, so Irwin decided to do some softer features for a new children's TV show he was doing with his daughter, Bindi.
"He came over the top of a stingray that was buried in the sand, and the barb came up and hit him in the chest," said Stainton.
Wildlife documentary maker Ben Cropp, citing a colleague who saw footage of the attack, told TIME that Irwin had accidentally boxed the animal in. "It stopped and twisted and threw up its tail with the spike, and it caught him in the chest," said Cropp. "It's a defensive thing. It's like being stabbed with a dirty dagger."

Steve Irwin, with wife Terri, holds a 9-foot female alligator in 1999

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality Monday morning off Port Douglas, according to Australian media.
Queensland Police Services also confirmed Irwin's death and said his family had been notified. Irwin was director of the Australia Zoo in Queensland. He is survived by his American-born wife Terri and their two children, Bindi Sue, born 1998, and Robert (Bob), born December 2003.
"The world has lost a great wildlife icon, a passionate conservationist and one of the proudest dads on the planet," Stainton told reporters in Cairns, according to The Associated Press. "He died doing what he loved best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind. He would have said, 'Crocs Rule!' "
Australia Prime Minister John Howard said he was "shocked and distressed at Steve Irwin's sudden, untimely and freakish death," according to AP. "It's a huge loss to Australia."
Irwin became a popular figure on Australian and international television through Irwin's close handling of wildlife, most notably the capture and relocation of crocodiles.
Irwin's enthusiastic approach to nature conservation and the environment won him a global following. He was known for his exuberance and use of the catch phrase "Crikey!"
"His message is really about conservation: He really wants to leave the world a better place for everybody," Animal Planet's Maureen Smith told CNN.com in April.
"It's unbelievable, really," Jack Hanna, the host of "Jack Hanna's Animal Adventure" and director emeritus of the Columbus (Ohio) Zoo, told CNN. "You think about Steve Irwin and you think of people who are invincible."
Hanna, a friend of Irwin's, noted that Irwin's persona of the Crocodile Hunter was no act. Irwin grew up around crocodiles, snakes and other animals at his parents' Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park and had been handling such creatures since he was a child.
"Steve really knew what he was doing. He was one of the finest reptile people in the world. He knew more about reptiles than anybody did. He was raised that way," said Hanna.
Though stingrays can be threatening, their sting -- usually prompted by self-defense -- is not often fatal. The bull ray that apparently stung Irwin was "a one-in-a-million thing," Cropp told TIME. "I have swum with many rays, and I have only had one do that to me."
"A wild animal is like a loaded gun -- it can go off at any time," Hanna told CNN. "You have to be careful of that." But, he added, it's not the animals who are inherently dangerous, but the way they may react around humans. "People use the word 'dangerous,' and that sometimes is a word that's not fair to that animal, because that animal is only using the defenses that God gave it," said Hanna.
Rise to popularity
Irwin first became popular with his show "Crocodile Hunter," which first aired on Australian TV in 1992. Eventually, the program was picked up by the Discovery Network in the United States, establishing Irwin worldwide.
His popularity led to a film, "The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course" (2002).
Irwin's image suffered a setback in January 2004 when he held his then 1-month-old baby Bob while feeding a crocodile at his Australian zoo. (Full story)
In a statement released to Australian media, Foreign Minister Alexander Downer expressed his sorrow and said that he was fond of Irwin and was very appreciative of all the work he had done in promoting Australia overseas.
In 2003, Irwin spoke to the Australian Broadcasting Corp.'s "Australian Story" television program about how he was perceived in his home country.
"When I see what's happened all over the world, they're looking at me as this very popular, wildlife warrior Australian bloke," he said, the ABC reported.
"And yet back here in my own country, some people find me a little bit embarrassing. You know, there's this ... they kind of cringe, you know, 'cause I'm coming out with 'Crikey' and 'Look at this beauty.' "
At Australia Zoo at Beerwah, south Queensland, floral tributes were dropped at the entrance, where a huge fake crocodile gapes, the AP reported. Drivers honked their horns as they passed.
"Steve, from all God's creatures, thank you. Rest in peace," was written on a card with a bouquet of native flowers.
"We're all very shocked. I don't know what the zoo will do without him. He's done so much for us, the environment and it's a big loss," said Paula Kelly, a local resident and volunteer at the zoo, after dropping off a wreath at the gate, according to the AP.
"He has left a legacy," Stainton told CNN. "That people do love some of the unloved animals like crocodiles and reptiles that people wanted to kill. He's actually put a position in their hearts for them. I want that to continue. ... I want people to really go out there and remember Steve Irwin for what he really was, which was a great conservationist, saving wildlife and actually promoting wildlife that people didn't love."

Cat adoption drive this Sunday!

There’s another cat adoption drive taking place this Sunday (3rd September) at the Singapore Expo. The Flyer and I will be there to take care of the CWS adoption booth.

Following the last adoption drive in April, there will be no ‘live’ cats at this one. The reason for this is to avoid stressing the poor cats out. They don’t do very well in strongly air-conditioned, scarily crowded, deafeningly noisy places packed with strangers trying to poke at them with fingers and brochures and what not.

Our strategy is to put up bright, colourful posters of the cats who are up for adoption. The outcome wasn’t so great the last time. While a good number of people showed a lot of interest in the cats, not many of our furry friends were successfully adopted out in the end.

There are many possible reasons for this… either because the fosters found the people to be lacking in some way, or the people themselves lost interest in the cats. But whatever the reasons may be, the adoption team has been hard at work to make this adoption drive a more successful one.

The team invested in bigger and better poster stands (so more cats can be publicised at the drive) and I have been hard at work every night trying to create more eye-catching posters of each cat.

So far, I’ve completed about 30 posters. I have about another 30 or so more to go.

Looking at this group of cats who are up for adoption this time, I’ve noticed a couple of familiar faces.
For example, there is a handsome tabby called Xiao Grey.

Handsome brothers, Xiao Grey (left) and Xiao Hei, remind me of Bombay and Bangles
I remember him from last April’s adoption drive. I created a poster for him and his brother, Xiao Hei. They were only 3 months old then.

This photo of Xiao Grey, used in last April's adoption drive, melted many hearts
Unfortunately, he still hasn’t been adopted out so I found myself staring at his photo again.

Photo to be used in this Sunday's adoption drive
He’s older now, but isn’t he as handsome as ever? I really really hope he’ll find a loving family this Sunday to take him to his Forever Home.
For those of you who would like to visit the adoption drive, here are the details for you.

This is really bad

A Singaporean cat feeder in her 50's got attacked while out feeding her two community cats one night. A dark-skinned man punched and throttled her, and then robbed her after she had passed out.

Now, we don't know who can take over the feeding of the two community cats. The area is clearly not safe.

Below is a video clip of the story on the Chinese news channel. For those who don't know Mandarin, please click here for the article in the English newspaper.

Mommy won't let me be a ninja cat

Bombay: Fanks for the lift, Daddy! Wow... so this is what it looks like up here.

Bangles: Er... 'scuse me... but I fink the curtain railing is starting to bend out of shape.

Mommy: Okay, off you go. I'm not forking out for a new curtain railing.
