Bombay in hot wax

Bombay's owner, Melvin, called me with a very unexpected question.

Melvin: How do you get wax out of fur?
Me: Oh my god... What happened?
Melvin: Er... nothing serious. Just that I was moving an aromatherapy candle. It still had hot wax on it and...
Me: And what?
Melvin: I tripped and spilt the wax on the floor. I didn't realise I had gotten some on Bombay. Later when I touched him, I was shocked to feel him so waxy on the bottom half.
Me: Is Bombay okay? Is he hurt?
Melvin: He really is alright. Not scalded at all.
Me: How much wax is on him?
Melvin: Erm... not that much...
Me: Hmmm...
Melvin: I read that you can use baby oil to try and work the wax out of the fur. If that doesn't work, I'll send Bombay to the groomer. And that poor guy will just have to have a bald patch.
Me: Oh dear... poor Bombay...
Melvin: It's all his own fault! He tripped me!
Me: You can try using ice, you know.
Melvin: What? Ice?! Er...
Me: Yeah, the cold from the ice will harden the wax further and it should be easier to get the wax out.
Melvin: I think I'll give the oil a go first.

Later in the night when I checked with Melvin on Bombay's waxy status, he said that by the time he had reached home from the grocery store with the baby oil, most of the wax from his fur was gone.

Melvin thinks Bombay must have licked them all off himself. I asked Melvin to monitor him closely for any signs of discomfort, and I am most pleased to say that Bombay is in excellent shape... both inside and out.

If he had groomed the wax out, it should pass out of his system soon enough. If I am not wrong, candle wax are made from paraffin and paraffin is an ingredient in laxative/hairball control gel for cats.

They are hardy, unlike humans.

Poor Bombay! Kitties don't need waxing - efur!
Nice job tripping the bean, though. Gotta keep em on their toes. Extra points for makin him run to the store an worry needlessly.

Oh dear, the same thing happened to Kukka Maria and they used oil(baby oil and olive oil) to remove the wax. She was none the worse for wear.

Good luck!

Hehe...sounds like something one of the Maine Coons would do. I remember one time one of the Brats ate a bath bead (the wax balls with the oils in it). The Mom called up the vet in a panic and he just laughed at her, said there was nothing to worry about but to keep an eye on him anyways. Silly kitties.

My Mom had a cat before us named Fluffy and she was cooking one day and touched the hot handle and dropped the pan and his fur got hot raspberry jelly on it. It did not burn him because of the thickness of his fur, but she couldn't get to him either so he enjoyed a raspberry treat. I don't think that qualifies for a stuffonmycat.com entry, though.

It's a tough job cleaning one's self, but someone has to do it. Bombay knew he couldn't wait for his human pet to get the proper supplies; he needed to be clean right immediately!

Hmmm. When I spilled chocolate milk on me, Mom gave me a water baf immediately! I didn't efun get to taste the milk. But I got wrapped in a towel to snuggle wif my boy. Maybe that's as good as chocolate milk.

Blame the cat, blame the cat. Humans must learn that it's never the cat's fault, it's always the humans fault. Glad Bombay is okay.
