A very Happy Lunar New Year to all our Chinese friends!

May the Year of the Water Dragon flood you with good luck and great fortune!

Because preparations for Chinese New Year includes a thorough spring cleaning of the house,

I thought I'd give both Slash and Bronzy a thorough cleaning too.

So after a good scrub-down in a warm bath,

I gave the kitties a furious brushing.

As you would all know by now,

Slash hates the Furminator with a vengeance.

His latest strategy to get out of a brushing session is to give me a high five.

So whenever I know that the brushing is over,

instead of just stopping, I'd ask Slash for a high five and he'd give me one.

Here's one of his high fives captured on a friend's mobile phone.

The Stain Saga Continues

Thank you for all your concern and advice.

Please be assured that Bronzy is in good health.

When Bronzy was little, she had a bit of peeing problem.

Thankfully, the house I was renting then had wooden flooring so cleaning up was easy.

Then the habit broke for quite a long while...

Only to resurface now.

And unfortunately, this rental apartment is mostly carpeted.

So yesterday, I went out to the shops to look for a solution to the stain problem

and I came home with this.

The sales rep said that this is the most powerful stain remover she has ever used in her own house.

But she did also say that she wasn't sure if it would work as well

now that bleach and Dettol are already in the carpet.

Oh well, no harm giving it a try now.

So when I got home from the shops, I immediately went to work on the carpet.

I poured the solution generously all over the stain

and then left it to soak overnight after covering the sodden areas with cling wrap.

When I took a peek at the stain this morning,

I was disheartened to see that it was still there all in all its orangey brilliance.

So I gave the carpet another generous soaking...

Grabbed the carpet brush...

And began to scrub the solution in.

I was determined to get this baby right into the fibres.

Almost right away, the solution began to foam.

So I scrubbed even harder...

Concentrating my efforts on that damn splotch.

I scrubbed till every bit of that orange was covered in foam.

Make that a mountain of foam!

Now that the foam has disappeared, this is what it looks like.

It doesn't look any better yet.

But I'm going to leave it overnight again and hopefully...

that awful orange would have faded into a less obvious yellow.

Pee Stain Devastation

Look at this pee stain disaster!

And look at the culprit!

Does she care?

I think not.

This is the first time that a cat under my care has peed on the carpet.

In fact, I hadn't even realised that Bronzy had done the naughty deed.

I found out only after I had picked up a strong pee smell and tried to trace it.

It was a day later that I discovered where the smell was coming from.

But, by then, there were two puddles on my row of flip flops.

So I soaked up what I could with paper towels first.

Then I used bleach over the affected areas.

Things were looking good but the smell was still there.

So a few days later, I used Dettol to rid the same areas of the smell.

And things were still going good,

except for a couple of yellowish stains that remained.

So this morning, I decided to have another go with the bleach.

But as soon as it hit the carpet,

this monstrous glowing orange stain popped out!

I've spent the entire day googling for solutions,

but there is nothing to address this potent pee-bleach-Dettol combo.

Hmm... Maybe I should start looking at carpet dye sticks.

A Lesson for Slash in Never Giving Up

Slash: I'm ready, Mommy! Go ahead and swing that wand!

Mommy: But, Slash, that bag strap is in your way. Why don't you move away from it first?

Slash: Don't worry about it. I have the moves! It won't get in my way at all.

Mommy: Alright then. Here it comes!

Slash reaches out quickly...

But gets smacked right in the face!

Mommy: Slash, are you okay?

Slash: Er... yeah! I meant for that to happen.

But the poor boy shrinks away in embarrassment.

Mommy: That's ok, Slashy. I'll swing it again and you'll get it this time. Here it comes!

Slash reaches out once more, this time with the other paw.

And the boy gets his feather!

And now... here was what happened 2 days ago when Mommy's friend brought a balloon to the house.

Slash got totally spooked by it and Mommy had to comfort him.

He kept wanting to run away, but Mommy made him stay.

She stroked his chin to calm him and explained that there was nothing scary about balloons.

So Slash did his best not to run and hide.

But he was extremely suspicious of the balloon.

He stared and stared and stared at it without blinking at all.

Gotta say that I was impressed that his eye balls didn't dry out.

And that he didn't get a stiff neck.

Mommy stayed to comfort Slash for quite a long time and he seemed to relax.

But the moment Mommy got distracted, he made a run for it.

Hmmm... looks like balloons can now be added to Slash's long and growing list of fears.

Come and See Our New Playroom

Welcome to our temporary playroom!

We have had this cage for 3 years now, but this is the 1st time that I am using it.

Bronzy had used it once before when she was still in a cone.

She was recovering from her busted stitches then.

Mommy doesn't like to confine us in a cage unless absolutely necessary.

And last week, it was necessary.

Mommy's aunt came to visit from Singapore and she stayed with us for 4 days.

She's a lovely person and was very sweet to us.

She baby-talked to us and even
bought us two months' supply of food and kitty litter.

But she has a huge phobia of cats.

(That's why it is remarkable that she feeds and cares for the stray cats

in her estate every single day unfailingly.)

So the day before her aunt arrived,

Mommy brought the cage out and turned it into a playroom for us.

And everyone was happy.

In fact, we love relaxing and playing in it so much that

Mommy has decided to leave it out for us this Christmas holiday

so we can wander in and out as we please.

We have our cat tree, our litterbox, both our beds and our water bowls in there.

Mommy also hung Charlie the Catnip Fish for us to play with.

But, because we had grown bored with poor Charlie,

Mommy sewed a leopard's tail on him to make him attractive again.

And it worked!

While one of us plays with Charlie,

the other will wait patiently in the bed.

Everyone says that we are good kitties for taking turns politely and not fighting.

And since it is still my turn with Charlie, wanna watch me thwap him some more?

PS. Poor Charlie and his new tail survived only one day.

He got completely mangled by the 2nd day. Then the string broke and he fell to his death.

Slash is 3 years old today!

Look at this cheeky little face.

I can't believe that it has been almost 3 years since he popped into my life

and slashed me on the chest.

Look at him now.

He has blossomed into fine young mancat with a huge personality to match.

And what a 3-year journey it has been!

In the first year and a half, for example,

touching was something Slash discouraged in a hissy-spitting-clawish sort of way.

Now, he allows me to cradle him for extended periods and

even lets me groom the top half of his body.

More amazingly,

Slash will now try to get my attention by resting one paw on my arm

or gently brushing the side of my face with his paw.

To rouse me from sleep in the morning,

he'll lick my nose, gnaw on my hair or prod me violently in the head

depending on how badly he wants his breakfast.

Without a doubt, Slash has brought me joy after joy with his antics

and I look forward to many more years of loving and caring for him.

Tomorrow night, some of his favourite human playmates will be throwing him a birthday party.

So, Slash, how will you greet your party guests tomorrow?

Sleepy Sunday Faces Hide 4am Destruction

The reason why Slash and Bronzy are looking like this is

because they kicked up quite a ruckus at 4am again.

This time, during what must have been a most exciting wrestling match,

Slash knocked over the kitty bar (it being one giant and two smaller bowls of water).

When I investigated the noise of the fallen porcelain, I saw that

water had covered half the kitchen floor and seethed through a portion of the living room carpet.

As innocent as Slash tried to look,

I knew that he was the one who had kicked the bowl over

because his back, butt and tail were dripping.

Indisputable evidence!

So don't let these sleepy faces fool you.

Lots of naughtiness are brewing behind them.

I have trained my Mommy so well

A Dramatic Butt-Washing

Because Slash is so floofy,
the business of pooping can get a little messy for him.

Guess who gets the fun job of cleaning his butt?

Here's a little peek at the soapy drama I have to endure from his butt-washing:

With my arm strategically hooked under his chest and between his arms,
I lower Slash into a sink with warm running water.

Because his fur is so thick,
it takes a while for him to feel the water on his behind.
He usually starts out being oblivious and fairly relaxed...

To being rudely shocked and offended.

The first physical struggle is usually a weak one.
At this stage, he is merely testing the strength of my grip on him.

As his patience wears thin, the struggles get stronger and more violent.

It is at this time that I have to be careful because
he would have figured out an escape route.

A look of utter mischief confirms my fear.

In a flash, he is out of my arms and on top of my shoulders,
his wet butt dripping conditioner all over me.

The naughty boy won't even bother to leap off
where I would have a better chance of re-capturing him.
Instead, he cleverly stays perched on my shoulders and out of my reach.

With help from my startled friend Jennet, Slash is back in the sink.
I assure her that I am unhurt.

Apart from getting wet...

And having my top torn by his claws, I have not been mauled.

A sulky Slash surrenders himself finally and
allows me to finish up the butt bath without further drama.

The final stage in Slash's torment is a quick drying of his bottom
with a super absorbent microfibre towel.

Wet and grumpy, but poop-free and smelling like green apples,
I release him to freedom.

I'll give Slash some peace for now...
before tormenting him with a good brushing of his bottom later.

Slash Hates Getting Brushed

Slash isn't the easiest cat to brush.

But I have to give it my best shot because
I don't want to keep sedating him for professional grooming.

I wish he understood that and would make it easy for me.
But his line of thinking goes something like,
"Why make it easy when you can make it hard for Mom?"

His protests usually begin with lots of grumbling.

They will then progress into a more violent form of struggling.

That is why I have to hug him in a very strategic pose.
Need to avoid getting clawed at and chewed on, you know.

When Slash finally tires himself out from all the fighting,
he will close his eyes and stay frozen in a rigid position.

But not without pulling some extraordinary faces
to show his continued disapproval of getting 'tortured' by the brush.

Farewell to a Dear Friend

Sweet Praline passed away peacefully yesterday with her Mom by her side.

She was 15.

I am grateful to have gotten to know Praline and her Mom,
Paula, through our blogs.

I remember when I introduced Slash to the blogosphere over 2 years ago,
Praline and her Mom were one of the first to welcome him warmly.

They have given us a loving space in their hearts ever since.

I will sorely miss reading about Praline's daily adventures,
especially the ones that she shares with her Mom.

They have a beautifully close relationship.

From that impish kitten...

To the lovely lady that she grew into...

Praline adored her Mom every step of the way to the very end.

In fact, it was on her Mom's shoulder that Praline laid her head
and shut her eyes for the last time.

Even as my heart aches, I cannot imagine the depth of Paula's grief.

I urge you to pay Praline's Mom a visit at her blog
and to leave a few words to help soothe a badly broken heart.
